Is Strength Training Safe for My BMX Kid?

I get this question from parents more than almost any other. Their kid's got the bug for BMX, they're looking at a strength program, and somewhere in the back of their mind is a worry nobody's ever really answered for them: is lifting weights going to stunt my kid's growth, or wreck a joint that hasn't finished developing yet?

It's a fair question. And the honest answer is no — not when it's programmed properly. Here's the actual research, not just my word for it.

Is Strength Training Safe for Kids?

Short answer: yes. When it's properly supervised and matched to a child's age and stage, resistance training is not just safe — the National Strength and Conditioning Association's official position is that it's advantageous, and it's associated with lower injury rates than most youth sports kids are already playing, BMX included.

Where the Fear Comes From

The concern usually comes down to growth cartilage — there are three sites in a growing kid's body where it matters: the growth plates at the ends of the long bones, the cartilage lining the joints, and the points where major tendons attach to bone. Damage one of those and yes, it's a real problem. That's where the “no weights until you're fully grown” advice came from, and for decades it was repeated as fact.

The problem is it was never actually backed by evidence. It was caution mistaken for science.

What the Research Actually Says

The National Strength and Conditioning Association's position statement on youth resistance training is unambiguous: properly prescribed and supervised resistance training is not just safe for children and adolescents — it's advantageous. Not neutral. Advantageous.

The injury numbers back it up. Youth resistance training carries an injury incidence of roughly 0.0017 to 0.29 injuries per 100 hours of training. Compare that to youth football, sitting somewhere between 0.6 and 3.9 injuries per 100 hours depending on the study, or elite youth football at 8.28 injuries per 1,000 hours overall — nearly double that during match play. Track, court, and field sport all carry meaningfully higher injury rates than a properly run strength session.

Properly designed resistance training doesn't just avoid adding risk — it reduces it. Kids who train strength alongside their sport show lower rates of fracture and muscle injury during sport-specific practice and competition than kids who don't. The thing parents are worried strength training might cause is actually the thing it helps prevent.

So What Went Wrong With the Old Advice?

Nothing went wrong with the caution — it just never got tested against real data, and once it did, it didn't hold up. The actual risk in youth strength training was never the weight. It was always poor supervision, no coaching on technique, kids handed a program built for adults, or gear and loads that weren't appropriate for their age and stage. Remove those and the risk drops close to zero.

That's the entire premise the NSCA guidelines are built on: qualified supervision, age-appropriate equipment, a safe environment, and a program that respects where a kid actually is — not where a 16-year-old or an adult is. Get those right and you're not gambling with a kid's growth plates. You're doing the single most protective thing you can do for a young athlete in an explosive sport.

What “Done Properly” Actually Looks Like

The NSCA's guidance is specific: 1 to 3 sets of 6 to 15 reps, on 2 to 3 non-consecutive days a week, with proper instruction on technique, safe handling of equipment, and sensible starting loads. That's it. That's not an aggressive program — it's a conservative, well-supervised one, and it's what the evidence supports.

It's also, not coincidentally, close to how I structure every HRVfit program by age. Junior Development riders (10–12) train bodyweight only — no bars, no plates, just learning to move well and build the habit. The Future (13+) adds light dumbbells once that foundation is there. Speed Athlete (16+) is the only tier that moves into a full gym setup with barbells. Nobody gets handed a load they're not ready for, and posterior chain work — the stuff that actually protects hamstrings and lower backs in an explosive, single-leg-dominant sport like BMX — is in every session, every tier.

At What Age Can Kids Start Strength Training?

There's no strict minimum age — readiness matters more than a birthday. Most kids can safely begin supervised, bodyweight-based strength work from around age 7–8, well before they're ready for any external load. External weight gets introduced later, once movement quality and coachability are there, not on a fixed age schedule.

Will Lifting Weights Stunt My Child's Growth?

No. There's no credible evidence that properly supervised resistance training stunts growth. Where growth plate injuries do occur in young athletes, they're almost always linked to unsupervised training, poor technique, or loads that were never appropriate for the child's stage — not to resistance training itself.

The Bottom Line

Strength training isn't the risk parents fear it is. Done properly, with the right supervision and age-appropriate structure, it's one of the most protective things you can put in a young rider's week — and the research backs that up clearly, not just as an opinion from someone who's coached this sport for 40 years.
